The Lewis River flows out of Shoshone Lake, though this "channel," and into Lewis Lake. From there it drops down Lewis River Canyon and flows into the Snake River near Yellowstone's South Boundary. It is part of the Snake River Headwaters National Wild and Scenic River.

The deluge of June 2022 seems to have filled the hot springs with muddy runoff. This is the first day the park reopened, so West Thumb had almost no visitors - and abundant parking - on a July afternoon. Inconceivable!
