The enigmatic painting of the Wayfarer/Pedlar ('Marskramer') by Hieronymus Bosch, is actually made up of two back panels from a former triptych as it looked in closed condition, and was later recut in its present octagonal shape.

I love the detail of the soldier in a brothel. He wears the new early 16th century shoes ('pinsons' with a strap and an instep that is mostly uncovered) and typical squarish tassets. His breastplate is attached by straps running diagonally over his back. Also note the fashionable striped boulevars (upper hoses) of the day.

I got the chance to have a private look at this remarkable painting, thanks to fellow Belgian Ruben Suykerbuyk, curator Old Masters at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum :)

What a discovery:
A very beautiful altarpiece depicting saints George and Sebastian on its closed side panels.
Pictures taken through the window of Cor Engelen Antiques shop, in my hometown of Leuven, Belgium.

The armour and dress of both saints are typically (south) German and can be dated, imho, around 1460:
Note St. George's armour, a combination of a 'new' Italianate breastplate in two pieces with a medial ridge (instead of the earlier Kastenbrust) and a fluted German fauld, in the ~1450s style, mimicing civilian dress.
St. Sebastian wears similar clothing as the St. George in the Georgsaltar of ca. 1460-1465 from Cologne: www.flickr.com/photos/roelipilami/51146910948/in/album-72...

Years ago I had the pleasure of going through Cor Engelen's extremely extensive collection of medieval art, which actually includes more works than that of many renowned museums in the world. Unfortunately they're hidden to the general public ...
