Obviously, insane crop and other manipulations to get these gray birds stand out of the gray muck that was the background on Nov. 16 2013. the next day, the gray turned into deadly tornados that raced through the very same region. Our hope is that birds and farmer alike escaped the worst.

We drove today to Jasper Pulaski, a field in northern Indiana where thousands of Sandhill Cranes come together before migrating south. We have been there 22 years ago; it has not changed much. the Cranes are just as amazing- we estimated 10,000 arrived by sunset. the light was at best dim- overcast skies, late afternoon, light diminishing- exactly the conditions that expose all the weaknesses of my A77. Switched to the A550 for the less noisy Chip. Still, can't wait for next year and a sunny weekend...
