Shadows on the wall as evening approaches; Church of St Mary and All Saints, Fotheringhay, Northamptonshire, England.
This structure dates from 1434 and is downstream from the remains of Fotheringhay Castle where Mary, Queen of Scots was beheaded in 1587 and King Richard III of England (the hunchbacked one made infamous by William Shakespeare and being found under a car park in Leicester) was born in 1452. His father, Richard, Duke of York ('Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious summer by this son of York,' as Shakespeare so memorably commented), was buried here in 1476, one of the major reasons why Queen Elizabeth I ordered the church saved from ruin in the 16th century.
Taken on May 21, 2023.
