Manfred von Richthofen, the 'ace of aces' in WW1 is thought to have shot down more than 80 enemy aircraft. He was killed in 1918, brought down, probably by rifle fire from the ground, although that is the subject of much debate. For me, the most terrifying thing about this most famous of war pilots, is that at the time of his death, he was aged just 25.
The Fokker Dr.1 Triplane or 'Dreidecker' was introduced in 1918, its design based on captured models of the British Sopwith Triplane of 1917, itself a modified design of the successful Sopwith Pup biplane. The use of three narrow main wings gave the types exceptional manoeuvrability and good pilot visibility. The three shorter main wings could withstand greater stresses than two longer wings of equivalent area, due to the limitations of the available materials of construction (wood covered canvas!)
The Sopwith Triplane was itself soon replaced in service by the even more robust Sopwith Camel.
