Our Red Baron wanted Ernst Udet as a wingman so badly that he drove through a rainstorm in order to recruit him personally. Udet survived the First World War with a total of 62 aerial victories. The Baron knew what was what.

During the Second World War, Udet was given high rank in the Luftwaffe, the German Air Force, but he desperately wanted out. When his direct superior, Hermann Goering, refused him permission to resign his position, Udet shot himself. Given the fact that Goering was making Udet a scapegoat for all the Luftwaffe's ills at the time, I soundly place the blame for his suicide before Hermann Goering.

After his death, the German Propaganda Ministry released a story stating that Udet had been forced to leave for health reasons. I've always maintained that they could've allowed the WWI hero to resign and then simply release the same story.
