A familiar bird. There are seven sub-species of which this could be one of two: N. p. islandicus or N. p. phaeopus. North American has two : N. p. rufiventris and N. p. hudsonicus. Here is a link to an article on whimbrels which also includes info on other European and North American bird pairs.
