Alcedo Atthis. Since this is a match to Don's Belted Kingfisher, I have included the latin name. I had seen a flash of this bird on three different occasions. This time, I was in a blind and it landed right in front of us for a couple of minutes. Albufera de Valencia, Spain

As I go through my archives, I find all sorts of interesting things. The Woodland Kingfisher that has this readily identifiable bi-colored beak is also supposed to have black legs and a blue head and shoulders. It looks like this is a hybrid with a Mangrove Kingfisher that lives 1200 km away on the east coast of Africa. Talk about a long distance relationship! Then again, it might be a hybrid with a Grey Headed Kingfisher, but that is less exciting.
