Today I learned of the sad passing of Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto at the early age of 71.

His instrumental “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” was probably the first song by a Japanese artist I ever listened to. His songs “Put Your Hands Up” and “Energy Flow” from the beautiful 1999 BTTB piano album and his rendition of the Ryūkyūan folk song “Asadoya Yunta” from the amazingly diverse 1989 Beauty album were among the songs played at my wedding. I had the pleasure of seeing Ryuichi Sakamoto perform live in Amsterdam way back in 2005, which was a mesmerizing musical experience and a memory I cherish dearly.

The death of Ryuichi Sakamoto is the loss of a great talent. It is a consolation that his wonderful compositions remain behind. The music he created with YMO, his many virtuoso solo projects and other collaborations will provide endless listening pleasure for sure, but do not take away from the sad fact that we have lost one of the world's most brilliant musicians. May he rest in peace.

With loans from all over the world, this promises to be the largest Vermeer exhibition ever. The Rijksmuseum itself has four masterpieces by Vermeer, including the world-famous Milkmaid and The Little Street. The exhibition will be on display from 10 February until 4 June 2023.
