I'm not who I was
or, will be someday
I’m in now, as smoke
Hankering for
air…
Diffused and ruined
in moments of life
That snap my breath
away…

Saguaros are indomitably resilient. They stand in harsh desert conditions often for more than 250 years and, as the true keystone king of their biome, sustain several other plants and animals. Often, they are seen in popular photos as silhouettes (or, semi-silhouettes) in the dramatic back-drop of a sunset where the viewer is likely more enchanted by the sky than the Saguaro. To bring the focus back to the giant cactus, this Saguaro-enamored nomad shot in the infrared to kill the sky. On purpose, he also shot into the sun to proxy the glaring heat that these beautiful creatures withstand for centuries. Other cacti were included in the frame because a king, no matter how lonely, must adorn his royal court. In this court, the indelible emperor of the neglected now looms large to the fugacious as the audacious eternity.

Few nanometers away from our visual domain exists the seldom-explored enigmatic world of the infrared (IR). Almost three decades ago, as a teenager, I was introduced to this otherworldly realm by some amazing IR photographs in journals and local exhibitions. Intrigued, I had read up everything I could to learn about the IR technique. However, as a cash-strapped teenage photographer, I did not have the means to explore it back then when a roll of Fuji film costed me my month’s savings. Three decades later, the latent urge to peek into this ‘other’ world resurfaced recently when I came across some magical IR images by Sandra Herber. Because shooting and processing this photo has revived that teenager from 30 years ago somewhere within, I am tempted to say, Sandra – I owe this one to you. But, to pay Sandra’s illustrious body of work homage with this image is like holding a candle to the sun. So, I will keep it to a simple thank you, Sandra.

This infrared image was shot at the hall of horrors (Joshua Tree National Park) with a 690mm I-Ray IR filter.
