On December 29, 2023, I inaugurated my new photo exhibition, “The B-Side,” at Marienhospital Witten.

At first I had reservations about photographing the beggar alone. I didn't want to take advantage of his situation and act against my principles. But when the lady next to him entered the stage, everything changed. She stood for maybe everything the beggar did not have: wealth, happiness and the chocolate side of life. This contrast between the two people gave the photo a socially critical expression.
Through this contrast, a message is conveyed to the viewer. The photo shows that life is not fair and that there is a gap between people that cannot always be overcome. It challenges the viewer to think about social conditions and to show solidarity with those who are on the worse side.
Art is also communication. It is not only about visual appeal, but also about making a statement. Contrasts are a powerful tool to create meaning in an image and convey a message. This is exactly what I wanted to show with this photo, which I took in Aix-en-Provence in France in the summer of 2017.

When is a street photo art?
It is important to note that the line between documentary photography and art is often blurred in street photography, and this is part of its fascination. What appears to be a work of art to a viewer often depends on their own interpretation and cultural context. Street photography offers room for diversity and individuality, and this is also reflected in the definition of street photos as works of art.
