Terminal 1 at Charles de Gaulle Airport was the first to be constructed in 1974 and sports a most unusual design. The main portion of the building consists of ten floors, only some of which are open to the public, with each floor dedicated to a particular function. The lowest publicly-accessible floor features an array of shops and restaurants, some check-in counters, and a sprinkling of brightly-colored chairs where a weary traveler may repose while waiting for the next flight.

After having my ticket scanned to confirm me as a passenger, I rode through a tube to the third floor, where I embarked on an undulating journey to the seventh of seven satellite terminals that lie evenly spaced around the circular terminal, with an eighth spot taken up by vehicular and rail access ramps.

It was very difficult to get the Alan Parsons Project song "I Robot" out of my head while looking into the central inaccessible courtyard at Charles de Gaulle Airport's Terminal 1 as it and the unusual tubes were features on the cover of the album, though the giant robot head is now replaced with an Oracle advertisement. The tubes are the primary means of going from one floor to another and are laid out in a seemingly haphazard manner.

After dipping down to allow planes to roll around overhead on the tarmac, the walkway rises above the surface to arrive at one of the satellite terminals where passengers pass through security and finally await the departure of the flight.
