The Pratt Street Power Plant was built from 1900-1909 for the United Railways and Electric Company and helped to power streetcars into the suburbs. It was largely obsolete by World War II and was vacant for a time, but now is the location for a number of commercial tenants, including Barnes & Noble and Hard Rock Cafe.

This roadside motel was not operatoinal when we passed by. Though a room could still be had as of 2008, today (Dec 2010) it is a vacant property that can be yours for $189,000.

The Boulevard of the Allies was an early highway-type road constructed in Pittsburgh from 1921 to 1923 to link Downtown to Oakland some three miles away. At the time of it's completion, it was the most expensive roadway in the world, costing some $1.6 million per mile. It was named in honor of the Allies of World War I and rededicated in 2008. The entry ramp seen here was the beginning of the downtown portion of the roadway and replaced a park that was used by the inhabitants of Pittsburgh's Chinatown, which is almost forgotten today.

I have no idea how long this group had been waiting, but it's plain that they don't expect to be going anywhere anytime soon.
