This is the male of the pair of Golden Conures in the Wetlands exhibit at the National Aviary. Long ago he suffered from a disease that caused him great distress, and as if often the case with stressed parrots, he repeatedly plucked out his own feathers. This occurred often enough that now the feathers will never grow back.

The cry of a Red-tailed Hawk is used in just about every movie or TV show known to mankind to signify any sort of raptor cry, especially in desert settings and in situations of peril. This is despite the fact that Red-tailed Hawks do not live in deserts and do not present any peril to anything except small creatures. The hawk seen in this picture is a juvenile.

In the Axial Chapel at the far eastern end of the Choir, directly opposite the Shrine of the Three Magi, which we were unable to see as just before we could get a glimpse, we were shooed out for a service.
