For those of you who I haven't connected with in a long time, a lot has happened in the last half year. Throughout the summer I spent a lot of time backpacking and camping, between the Oregon and Washington cascades and the Nevada desert. This image is from my first day experiencing Nevada.

In the fall, I applied and got a job based out of Reno working the dream job, analyzing wilderness characteristics in potential roadless (undesignated) wilderness areas. The job went from September to November and I was out every week checking out incredible desert scenery. I'm still trying to get accustomed to being back home in the rain. The desert has left a permanent impression on my heart.

As I have done for the last three years, I'm again selling a wall calendar of my images. This years theme is the great basin desert and the quiet and grand beauty I have found there. It is my best calendar yet, featuring not only photos but words I've written about the desert, and wire ring bound. I printed a lot of these this year.. Check it out!

Peak early season wildflowers in the gorge back a few weeks ago.

I figured everyone has a shot of the lupine and balsamroot (myself included) so I should put more work into shooting the early season wildflowers.

About 1/3 of the way into the river I couldn't help but take note of the fast pounding of the current, waist deep, threatening to take my relatively light body effortlessly downstream. This is perhaps the heartbeat of the landscape, beating clear but green blood... Humans often take for granted the absolute power of the natural world; we take it and tap into it for our own uses without a thought. That is, until one feels that power close up...

Two crossings later we stumbled into view of this majestic feature and took it in... Within minutes the rain came and along with it the dense fog, making for these unique atmospheric conditions.

If you're at all interested, I am currently taking pre orders for my book, "With Nothing for the Wind to Catch," which is a collection of my experiences and photographs based on my six month long endeavor to discover eastern Oregon's deserts, canyons and mountains. I'm selling it for $80; it features 60+ photographs and 8 chapters of writing on high quality paper; 8x10 inch hardcover with dust jacket. If this sounds like something you are interested in purchasing, please contact me at jameypyles@me.com.
