Two monks stand at the base of a giant reclining Buddha in Vietnam. Reclining Buddhas are a common motif in Theravada Buddhism, as it symbolizes "Parinirvana," the moment of Buddha's death and final passing into Nirvana, and the ultimate state of liberation from suffering and rebirth in Buddhist belief. I have seen giant statues of reclining Buddhas in many parts of SE Asia, including China, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. Currently, the largest statue of a reclining Buddha is located in Myanmar and measures about 180 meters (590 feet) in length.

Returning the gaze - sometimes with an indignant look of resistance or a long studied stare as the observer becomes the observed. The gaze is returned, the observer othered. Subject owns the gaze for a frozen moment.
