En los jardines del Palacio Real de La Granja de San Ildefonso, hay un estanque artificial conocido como "El Mar". Se usa para poder abastecer de agua a todo el parque, y debido a su altura se alcanza una presión de agua necesaria para el sistema de riego y el funcionamiento de las fuentes.
Este sistema funciona desde el siglo XVIII.

La ciudad histórica fortificada de Carcasona o Carcassonne, junto a la orilla derecha del río Aude, fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1997.
La parte fortificada de Carcasona llegó a estar tan deteriorada, que el estado francés consideró seriamente derruir las murallas. A tal efecto se redactó un decreto oficial en 1849 que produjo gran revuelo: el historiador Jean-Pierre Cros-Mayrevieille y el escritor Prosper Mérimée promovieron una campaña para preservar la fortaleza como Monumento histórico. Ese mismo año se le encargó al arquitecto Eugène Viollet-le-Duc el proyecto de renovación de la ciudad alta.
El carácter defensivo de la Cité a lo largo de su historia ha influído en la complejidad de su arquitectura, donde se refleja notablemente el arte militar. Constituye la mayor fortaleza de Europa por su complejidad y la calidad en su conservación.

The historic fortified town of Carcassonne or Carcassonne, along the right bank of the Aude River was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.
The fortified part of Carcassonne became so deteriorated that the French government seriously considered to demolish the walls. For this purpose an official decree in 1849 that caused a stir was written: the historian Jean-Pierre Cros-Mayrevieille and writer Prosper Merimee promoted a campaign to preserve the fortress as a historical monument. That same year he commissioned the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc the renovation project of the upper town.
The defensive nature of the Cité throughout its history has influenced the complexity of its architecture, where notably reflects the military art. It is the largest fortress in Europe by its complexity and quality preservation.
