La Plaza Mayor o Rynek Glówny, en polaco, es el corazón de Cracovia. Mide 200m de lado a lado. Fue construida en el siglo XII y es la más grande de Europa. En el centro de la misma está el antiguo mercado de paños (Sukiennice), un edificio precioso rodeado de arcadas, que alberga actualmente un mercadillo de artesanía en su planta baja, y parte del Museo Nacional en su primera planta. El ámbar es uno de los productos típicos de Polonia.
La Iglesia gótica de Santa María es el edificio que se ve al fondo-derecha. Su decoración interior y su altar mayor medieval son impresionantes. Además es posible subir hasta la torre más alta de la iglesia, desde donde se divisa toda Cracovia. Desde esta torre, cada hora en punto, un trompetista toca parte de una canción que es retransmitida por radio a todo el País como señal horaria. Se trata de una tradición que cuenta que un trompetista alertó de la invasión de la ciudad desde la torre, aunque fue alcanzado por una flecha antes de terminar la canción. Hoy día se conmemora así y toda la plaza queda en silencio para escuchar esta melodía.
En dicha Plaza tomé ésta fotografía (y muchas más, claro) a las 6,45 h. de la mañana, Lunes, por eso estaba vacía. El día anterior, Domingo, hizo un tiempo radiante, con lo cuál todo el mundo estaba en la calle, especialmente ésta Plaza estaba llena de quioscos de flores, de restaurantes típicos, de carruajes de caballos, de grandes artistas callejeros, músicos, pintores, todo tipo de atracciones, de mucha gente y de vida. Me encantó formar parte de ese maravilloso ambiente tan bonito y acogedor.

The Plaza Mayor or Glówny Rynek, in Polish, is the heart of Krakow. It measures 200 meters of side to side. It was built in the twelfth century and is the largest in Europe. In the center of it is the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), a beautiful building surrounded by arcades, which now houses a craft market on the ground floor, and the National Museum on the first floor. The Amber is one of the typical products from Poland.
The Gothic church of Santa Maria is the building seen in the background-right. His interior decoration and his major medieval altar are impressive. It is also possible to climb to the highest tower of the church, From where it is possible to see whole Cracovia. From this tower, every hour, a trumpeter plays part of a song that is broadcast by radio across the country as time signal. It is a tradition that a trumpeter warned of the invasion of the city from the tower but was hit by an arrow before finishing the song. Today it is commemorated of this way, and all is quiet to hear this tune.
In that square I made this photograph (and many more, of course) were the 6.45 h. am, Monday, so it was empty. The previous day, Sunday, did a radiant time, therefore all were in the street, especially in this square was full of kiosks of flowers, typical restaurants, carriage rides of horses, street performers featuring music, of painters, all kinds of attractions, many people and life. I loved being part of this wonderful atmosphere so nice and welcoming.
