Los orígenes de Colmar se remontan a unos cinco mil años antes de Cristo.
Es capital de la alta Alsacia Francesa y la anfitriona de la gran Feria de los Vinos de Alsacia (en Agosto), posiblemente una de las mas importantes de toda Europa. Esta Feria se viene celebrando desde hace más de dos siglos.
La parte antigua está exquisitamente conservada, y pasear por sus calles es deslumbrarse con edificios de estilo Gótico, Alemán y del primer Renacimiento.
Entre los lugares más pintorescos que se pueden visitar se encuentra la Pequeña Venecia, un barrio de casitas tradicionales alsacianas que se ubican a lo largo de la orilla del río Launch. La mejor forma de recorrerlo, es dando un paseo en barca.
Los notables pintores Martin Schongauer y Matthias Grünewald encontraron aquí su inspiración. Sus obras aún pueden verse en el Museo de Unterlinden, que ocupa otro edificio histórico de Colmar, el antiguo convento de la Orden Dominicana. Otro lugareño ilustre es Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, más conocido como el creador de la Estatua de la Libertad, icono de Nueva York.
Colmar también es conocida como la Ciudad del Arte.

The origins of Colmar date ascend to about five thousand years before Christ.
She is the capital of the high French Alsace and the hostess of the great Fair of the Wines of Alsace (in August), possibly one of the important mas of the whole Europe. This Fair is celebrated for already two centuries and six decades.
The ancient part is exquisitely preserved and to walk along her is to be dazzled by buildings of Gothic, German style and of the first Renaissance.
Among the most picturesque places that you can visit is Little Venice, a neighborhood of traditional Alsatian houses that are located along the banks of River Launch. The best way to cross it, is taking a leisurely boat ride.

Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, best known as the creator of the Statue of Liberty, New York icon, also born in this village.
