La villa de Luarca está unida al mar, y es desde siempre un enclave pesquero de gran importancia, sobre todo en la captura de la ballena. Lo habitual es ver a los pescadores faenar y llevar el género a la cofradía de pescadores.
El puerto y sus barrios marineros, su llamativo cementerio en las alturas con vistas al mar, y el faro, forman un conjunto de gran belleza. Su paseo marítimo es impresionante, así como sus playas. La arquitectura tradicional tiene dos, tres o cuatro alturas. Discurrre por el casco urbano el denominado río Negro.
Es zona de paso del Camino de Santiago, por lo que durante todo el año hay tránsito de turismo. Por tanto tiene muy buenos restaurantes donde se come de maravilla, y un buen surtido de tiendas.
