Steptoe Butte is a popular international destination for landscape photographers. The visibility of the farmland that surrounds it rolls on for 70-100 miles, creating a Tuscan-like tapestry of mixed agricultural colors and shadows.

"Steptoe Butte is a quartzite island jutting out of the silty loess of the Palouse hills. The rock that forms the butte is over 400 million years old, in contrast with the 15–7 million year old Columbia River Basalts that underlie the rest of the Palouse. Steptoe Butte has become an archetype, as isolated protrusions of bedrock, such as summits of hills or mountains, in lava flows have come to be called "steptoes." Wiki

Some seasonal views from the Butte in comments.

As always, thank you for your visit and for any comments, faves and suggestions.

Looking down from Steptoe Butte at some of the rolling farmland after the harvest. While it's best known for it's rolling green fields it's also pretty after the sun has burnished the grains into glowing golds. Soon it will be rolling hills of white.

A few more seasonal Palouse shots in comments.

Enjoy this first weekend in December!

It begins. Snow is falling. A few weeks early. But it sure is pretty.

A snowy Palouse shot from the past. Looks like it could be a long white winter.

Have a wonderful weekend!

A view of the Palouse river canyon right below the falls, posted yesterday.

This was taken from the goat trail half way down the basalt cliff. I haven't been back since then but have heard that they have blocked it off. Sure hope not.

Thanks for the smiles you bring with your visits, faves and support.

The Palouse is known for it's green and brown blends of colorful rolling hills and gullies. I took a drive last January to Steptoe Butte to see the Palouse covered in snow. I had to hike up the Butte as the road wasn't open to the top. The frigid harsh winds were wicked but the views made it all worthwhile. Was different having it all to myself. Normally quite a popular destination.

Have a wonderful week, hopefully not too cold.
