An image of my jousting friend from last fall. I did admire his thick neck and big shoulders. Was getting dark so light was challenging. Hope he visits again next fall. I'll be enjoying his fawns this summer.

Reminds me of a stance and pose of Bambi's father.

A shy porcupine came to visit. Wouldn't smile for me, kept his back to me most of the time. Handy tho to show the mixed colors of the various sized arsenal on his back. Single quills are interspersed with bristles, underfur, and hair.

"Porcupines' quills, or spines, take on various forms, depending on the species, but all are modified hairs coated with thick plates of keratin, embedded in the skin musculature. Quills are released by contact or may drop out when the porcupine shakes its body. New quills grow to replace lost ones.

Despite what is commonly believed, porcupines do not have the ability to launch their quills at range." wikipedia
That's a good thing.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Our moose hound, Teddy, noisily let us know we had a visitor in the front yard a couple days ago. Teddy has a special bark/yodel when it's the moose. I stepped out and took this shot as the calf checked out the dogs saying hi. He/She and his mother had spent the night laying, somewhat sheltered from the strong subzero winds. They sure leave some big snow-angels.

The moose like to dine on the shrubs to the left. They keep coming back to trim them up nicely for us. They also did some trimming on some other shrubs I wish they hadn't, but they gotta eat.

I thought he was pretty big, until he stood next to mother. I wasn't able to get any good shots of her, unfortunately, as she was quite camera shy.

We look forward to each years new arrival of whitetail fawns, and this was our first for 2010. They are so innocent, pure and beautiful. He/She could barely walk, but did manage to get here for a rest. Took a few photos and left.

I'm always surprised that the mothers are so nonchalant and wander off without concern even when she knew I was approaching her fawn. Guess they know over the years that I mean no harm.

Many more does are expecting, some large with twins, so many more happy sightings and fun lies ahead.

Now this is rather an excellent "camouflage" technique, wouldn't you say? Fit in with the trees.

Missy has a bit of an attitude......
