In Khangat Sidi Nadji, a beautiful old town surrounded by an oasis at the foot of the Aures Mountains and opening to the desert. We met this 84 year old man who very kindly invited us to his humble home. He seemed to be the last inhabitant left in this picturesque but spooky ghost town, where a bored group of soldiers occupying the old French colonial Mairie were the only other characters in the neighbourhood. He told us of the time of the French, the war 50 years ago and the part he played. We stayed for a while, ate a few dates in his room while the muted TV was showing news about Libya. It all seemed very far, time had stopped, a peaceful atmosphere…
