Bacharach is a town in the Mittelrhein wine region of Germany. It lies on the Rhine river 8 miles (12.5km) downstream from Bingen and 22 miles (35km) south of Koblenz. The town was historically important to the local wine trade as a transfer point. Wine barrels were offloaded from smaller ships that could pass the reef upstream at Bingen, and loaded onto bigger ones to continue their journey north.
