This is our little Hopi chipmunk that we rescued from the road a few days ago. He was hypothermic and dehydrated, and could barely stand or open his eyes. A few days, some pedialyte and baby milk formula later, and he’s got his mojo back! We’ll raise him up a bit, then return him to where we found him to give him a second (and hopefully better) shot at making it in the wild. In the meantime, he’s giving us our daily dose of cuteness!

A male greater sage grouse displays at a lek near Coalmont, Colorado. Essentially, it is a show of dominance and fitness, designed to impress the scrutinizing females. On this day, there were about two dozen males at the lek, but sadly no females. Still, the males soldiered on and gave it their all, despite a lack of audience.

Two male greater sage grouse discuss their differences at a lek near Coalmont, Colorado. The grouse will approach each other until they are next to each other head to tail, at which time they may decide to fight by clubbing eachother with their wings, and using their claws and beaks. In this case, one of the birds maintained a safe distance by backing up as the other advanced, in this case successfully avoiding a fight.

I'm not sure what inspires this creature to make an effort like this, but I do appreciate it for what it does! Seen at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, CA.
