I've been away from Flickr for quite a long time now, ever since my old laptop kicked the bucket some months back. It didn't take long for me to secure a new laptop, and although it's way better in some respects, I feel like it's lacking in one of the most important aspects for photography: its display. So I've been struggling for a long time with editing my stuff, and to be honest, I haven't been enjoying it. I feel like I'm wrestling with the hardware to get something I'm not even sure looks decent out of it, and so I basically just stopped doing it for a while :( But the longer that drags on, the more the excuse feels like just that - an excuse - and not one substantial enough to warrant completely throwing in the towel. And anyway, I'll be moving soon(ish) and I'll be trying to put together a new computer with the quickness, along with a nice IPS monitor. Hopefully :P Until then, I may be uploading some slightly dodgily-edited pics, though I hope they're still somewhat pleasant to look at. Now more than ever, any constructive criticism would be appreciated, as then maybe I can get a clue as to what ways the monitor is skewing my images, and act accordingly. Cheers y'all :)

The Sharrow Bay hotel is a lovely place to visit if you're ever in the Lake District. I'd like to spend some time roaming these hills. Perhaps a visit is in order...

You're not paranoid if you really are being followed...
I think there's a nice photo hinted at with this picture, but this likely isn't it. There were small groups of armed guards patrolling the Notre Dame area (though I can't actually recall their presence at all the major Parisisian tourist spots) and I thought a shot of them strutting past Notre Dame might be cool. Thing is, there are rather a lot of other people in that area too, and trying to fit in the door and the guards whilst keeping pedestrians out of frame meant I only had the one chance to get it right, unless I was willing to wait for them to do another pass at some unknown time (which I wasn't...). I wish there was more breathing room between the left edge of the frame and the woman too, but there's a lamp post just out of view and it looked naff if included. I had to do some serious distortion correction to get a predominance of straight lines here too, which meant more cropping... Anyway, I'll stop tearing down my own shot, eh? :P

Almost done with the shopping, which is good because wrapping things takes me weeks. I'm amazed at how crap I am at it.

I'm back, baby!! Had a catastrophic laptop failure (it wouldn't even turn on) and so couldn't edit or upload any pics for the two weeks that I was technology-free. Got a new laptop now but since the screen is different, I'm a bit worried that all my edits are in vain or will need work. The screen is bright and vibrant but it almost seems too much so. And colours look a bit oversaturated already... Anyone have any experience calibrating a laptop monitor (on the cheap!)? Anyway, I have a lot of catching up to do so I'll go get to work. Cheers y'all.
