Image Description: |
The Black skimmer has one of the most amazing feeding behaviors of any North American bird. As the bird flies low over the water with its lower bill penetrating the surface, its upper bill snaps shut instantly when it senses a fish. On a muggy summer morning, I was setup at the edge of the shoreline photographing skimmers skimming the bay for fish. An ordinary-looking skimming pass took an unexpected turn when this skimmer slammed his head into the water to grab a fish as it sliced through the water. This shot displays the incredible neck dexterity skimmers have in hunting for fish. Instead of crashing and cartwheeling he effortlessly popped back up, regaining airspeed with just a few flaps of those powerful wings. I look forward to summers at beach photographing these beautiful birds. This image was taken in Ocean City, New Jersey USA. |
