Just a quick post to wish you all a Prosperous, Happy and Healthy New Year ahead and to thank all those that still keep in touch and Follow, Comment, Fav etc, I know I haven't been very active on here of late but I do pop back from time to time to drop the odd post and to see how you're all doing if I don't happen to bump into you on the plethora of other Media Platforms out there.
Here we have Y Dre Newydd Barracks (the new town) also known as Anglesey Barracks which can be found within Dinorwic Quarry in Wales, two rows of 11 Cottages/Houses and the best surviving of a number of Barrack complexes which once housed members of the Quarry Workforce, built around 1870 and inhabited until 1937.
An eery place on the right day/night but a very interesting one too.
ATB for 2023 and beyond! :)

Here we have the Beast that is the Hornet Robberfly (Asilus crabroniformis), seen here with it's Crane Fly Prey.
At over an inch long with black and yellow markings they are ferocious predators of other insects and one of the UK’s largest species of insects.
They breed in animal dung on heathland and downland, the larvae hatching and feeding on beetle grubs in the soil. a priority species in conservation with the main reason for decline being the transferral of harmful chemicals from the treatments farmers use on their livestock, to the dung in which the insects live. In turn, this kills, or causes serious deformities in, the robberflies that feed on the dung :(

Pellucid Fly or Large Pied-hoverfly - Had a couple of outings whereby I came across a few of these darting about like they do and always like to try and get a reasonable picture of them in flight which is always a challenge when they are darting in and out of the dappled light of the woodland glades, one of our largest Hoverflies here in the UK with the name Pellucid meaning Translucent which refers to the ivory-white band across its abdomen.
A fairly common species and a predator of social wasps and bumblebees. The female lays her eggs in the underground nests of her hosts, after hatching, her larvae will initially feed on the host’s young or will scavenge by eating the remains of food brought in by the bees or wasps, waste products, and even dead adults.
Syrphidae Diptera (true flies).
