Just south of Nags Head on the North Carolina Outer Banks, Bodie Island lighthouse is one of seven lighthouses on the state's coast. A recent renovation now allows visitors to climb this lovely light.

You'll notice a small shell injury on this sea turtle. In a week of snorkeling, I was pleasantly surprised to see very little evidence of past trauma in the sea turtles in St. John. In my home state of North Carolina, when I've seen sea turtles, it's often been with propeller injuries in a hospital. It was reassuring to see so many apparently healthy animals in the protected Caribbean waters.
