On the following morning, Tom and I grimaced as the alarm went off at 3:30 AM and we wearily got ready for our morning shoot at Crater Lake. We arrived at the rim just after 5 AM. When we first pulled up, Tom wanted to try a Milky Way shot from down near one of the lodge buildings. I jumped out to follow him but gave up after only a few minutes as I couldn't stop shaking. The wind was howling and the temperature was somewhere in the 20's. We then set off on foot to walk the mile or so out to Discovery Point. It was already starting to get light when we arrived at the overlook and we set up our tripods and tried our best to keep warm.
Our original goal was to make it all the way out to the Watchman Overlook, but it was another 3 miles or so away and we were afraid to make the attempt only to miss the moment when the sun would crest across the lake. As we began shooting, both of us actually preferred this location on this particular morning as both of us were shooting with the Rokinon 12 mm fisheye, which did a fantastic job of pulling the entire lake into the frame while leaving the "Danger! Keep back! sign in the foreground. I'm glad to say that both of us heeded the sign....for the most part. We had been concerned that we wouldn't see the sun at all that morning as the forecast called for thick clouds, but we definitely got lucky as the sun burst over the ridge about 40 minutes after I took this shot. Definitely worth the early alarm, the hike, and the freezing wind.
