When visiting a puffin colony, the first images are always simply the puffins. After that one becomes pickier and seeks out the puffins with beaks full of tiny fish, which they are bringing home to their burrows for their young ones. Ultimately, one seeks out the birds in flight with the "goods" ... so stay tuned for more.

Atlantic Puffins are absolutely amazing creatures ... so colorful, comical, agile in flight ... not to mention speedy little demons too. It was both a thrill and an honor to be able to have spent time photographing them on our recent trip to Iceland. Check that one off my photography "bucket list". :-)

Hope that you enjoy this image, as well as your upcoming week.
Thanks for looking!

A few years back, found this juvenile peregrine falcon soaring overhead, banking its turns, and overall practicing flight maneuvers in the sky ... as we watched with awe. Colorado is home to many amazing raptors.

Happy Friday ... hope that you enjoy your upcoming weekend!

I absolutely love the pika ... like watching a game of "whack-a-mole" as they emerge so quickly and scurry along the rock pile and grassy area. Often they are returning to their home carrying a mouthful of greens and flowers stocking up for the winter. It's so tough to leave the scene when you find a good spot for viewing. LOL. I'm sure that many of you can agree. :-)

Such is the life of the coastal brown bears ... eat more salmon. Why not? It provides for much of their nutritional needs and also helps build up their fat reserves, which helps them get through the winter. As you can see, this bear is well on its way! LOL

Technique matters, as any fisherman can attest to, and this bear sure know the technique of securing its catch and in the filleting skills. Got to eat quick to be able to get on to its next catch.

Katmai National Park is my favorite place to photograph this behavior, as well as spend time learning more and more about their behavior. :-)

Thanks a bunch for peeking in. Comments are always welcome and appreciated. Have a great upcoming weekend!

Not too long ago we visited Iceland for the first time. I had longed to go there, but I always thought it would be for aurora viewing, ice caves, and winter landscapes. I had always wanted to see and photograph puffins ... so off we went during the early summer. Of course, there would be no aurora sightings since Iceland is the land of the midnight sun, especially the more northern you go in Iceland. We also didn't participate in any ice cave adventures, saving that opportunity for another trip perhaps. Wildlife is also sparse, with the arctic fox being the only native species, except for the Icelandic horses and free-roaming sheep. It was however one of the most beautiful places , both in their natural landscapes and features, as well as their people. <3

However this trip was for the birds, specifically the Atlantic puffin, which call the island their home and breeding grounds. Not just a few either, but thousands of mating pairs. They go out to fish, bring them home to their burrows, and off they go again. I don't think that any other bird is quite as photogenic as the puffins. Beautiful, full of color and expressions, which make them quite comical to witness. It was a fascinating experience to not only photograph them, but more importantly to me, to observe their behavior. Knowing their behavior proved key to capturing some amazing images. So you might be wondering if we were able to capture the iconic "fish in the beak" images that everyone seeks ... well, you'll have to stay tuned. ;-)

I look back fondly on our time that we spent in Iceland ... <3
