The north portal of Wenvoe tunnel, at ST1141175293 / ELR code: CTD 3 23. Note the datestone, now almost obscured by moss. The cutting here can be accessed from the superstore car parks above, & a crude path runs down the left side of the bank. On this occasion, the cutting was quite moist, shall we say, but can flood completely.

Detail of moss encrusted date stone above the north portal of Wenvoe tunnel. 1888 relates to the date of construction – the line opened in 1889, though there is a lot of confusion over the actual opening date, with some saying 1898. A definitive answer would be most welcomed!

One thing tunnels built through limestone will have is calcite & Wenvoe is no exception, though with not as many formations as some. This niche in the west wall is a photographers favourite, I've noticed. In some areas, large sections of calcite have fallen away from the crown.

On my visit, the tunnel was particularly misty at times, esp. nearer the south portal. This view from the north end is not too bad. The rustiness to the side is the result of just the one reinforcing ring found throughout the whole just over a mile long bore. This might be a metal butt joint, as the bore showed no signs of bulging or stress.
