The Godwits generally prefer the larger, more succulent crabs that they extract from under the mud-flats with their long bills. But this bird decided it might as well take the easy pickings from the legions of Soldier Crabs all around it. Perhaps it couldn't be bothered digging for a meal.

Red-capped Plovers will sometimes feign a broken wing to distract attention from a nearby nesting site. In this case, the male unwittingly came very close to my prone position on the sand - and belatedly realised that he had company. He then launched the distraction display. The birds will also often drag their tails on the ground to imitate injury in an effort to lead intruders away from the area.
