Heligoland is a small German archipelago in the North Sea.
Formerly Danish and British possessions, the islands (population 1,127) are located in the Heligoland Bight (part of the German Bight) in the south-eastern corner of the North Sea. They are the only German islands not in the immediate vicinity of the mainland and are approximately three hours sailing time from Cuxhaven at the mouth of the River Elbe.

Helgoland sowie die unbewohnte Nebeninsel Düne bilden zusammen die amtsfreie Gemeinde Helgoland im Kreis Pinneberg in Schleswig-Holstein. Diese ist zwar Teil des deutschen Wirtschaftsgebiets, gehört aber weder zum Zollgebiet der Europäischen Union noch zum deutschen Steuergebiet.

Die Lange Anna ist das Wahrzeichen der deutschen Nordseeinsel Helgoland. Sie ist ein 47 Meter hoher und etwa 25.000 Tonnen schwerer, freistehender Felsen (Felsnadel) aus rotem Buntsandstein mit einer Grundfläche von 180 m² im äußersten Nordwesten der Insel.

Der Basstölpel (Morus bassanus) ist ein gänsegroßer Meeresvogel aus der Familie der Tölpel. Innerhalb dieser Familie ist er die am weitesten im Norden brütende Art und die einzige, die auch in Europa brütet. Seit 1991 ist der Basstölpel auch Brutvogel auf Helgoland.
