Pileated Woodpecker (Hylatomus pileatus)

This young Pileated Woodpecker was a nice surprise today. The weekend is a washout, weather-wise, here in Florida with a storm in the Gulf covering the area in clouds and on-and-off rain. So, I decided to bird by car in an effort to find a local nemesis bird known to frequent a cemetery in the area. As I was driving slowly through this cemetrary, looking for my nemesis, this young Pileated was right next to the drive at eye level. Couldn't believe my luck when he didn't fly off as I pulled parallel to him. He was so close I couldn't fit him all in the frame! I love how you can see the Palm Trees reflected in his eye. (and I found my nemesis too!)

Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens)

This could possibly be the most photographed Reddish Egret on Flickr. He's affectionally known as "Big Red" at Fort DeSoto Park in Florida. He seems to have almost no fear of people, as if he enjoys the photographic attention. Don't hate me if I tell you his head feathers are up because there was another Reddish Egret (white morph) in the tidal pool. We're incredibly spoiled here with our fantastic wading birds.

Green Heron (Butorides virescens)

This young Green Heron is taking a stab and learning how to hunt on his own. It was a swing and a miss on this attempt, but he did eventually snag a couple small fish. This caught the attention of a nearby Snowy Egret who promptly came over and took his perch. I wish my coworkers would do that to me when I start eating too many chips!

Happy Friday all!

Wilson's Plover (Charadrius wilsonia)

I always think of these guys as the Jimmy Durante of the plover family. This Wilson's was busy scurrying around on the tidal flats successfully catching crabs.

Yellow-crowned night-heron (Nyctanassa violacea)

I love seeing our Florida herons and egrets sport their breeding plumages during the spring. This is one bird, however, that I rarely see all dressed up.
