Ahhhhh, the lovely romance of a San Francisco sunset…. but that's not why I came. I came in hopes of fog. The web cams were looking promising, so I called some friends and traveled to this spot, only to watch the sky clear up as it took colors. I didn't mind however… how could you?

Lots of folks have taken outstanding pictures of our beloved Milky Way, but I hadn't made any attempt until just a couple of weeks ago while in the Eastern Sierras in the Mammoth region (near Rainbow Falls) surrounded by a burned down forest.

The hardest part was finding a space of time where no aircraft were in view. I tried lighting the foreground but it was futile in just how unnatural everything turned out, so I decided to go for a silhouette instead.

The orange glow in the corner is from the oncoming moonrise that was just below the horizon.

Taken at Bowling Ball Beach. The beach was especially crowded on this low tide day, so I decided to go to "the lanes" as I call this area. The sun was just starting to set behind the marine layer and right after I took this series of shots, the color left the sky and everything turned grey. The tide was also a bit too far out this evening… I learned a few things this first time out to this area. Definitely looking forward to returning.

I have never experienced this lake without a wind tunnel effect before. I had a feeling this night however that this was exactly what I was going to find. The Mono Lake Basin was extremely calm, but even then this narrow canyon seems to like to produce it's own weather systems, so you can never be too sure.

Sometimes the effect of water turning to glass is made possible by doing a long exposure, and even though this is just that, this is pretty much what the lake looked like… sans the stars streaking through the night sky and that same sky turning a cobalt blue.

Not more than ten minutes after this picture was taken, the wind picked up and the glassy effect was gone.

I'm slowly learning to always trust my instincts.
