Sunrise this morning was unforgettable from my Bumi Hills villa in Zimbabwe. Over the course of the last week this place has become one of my favourite spots in Africa. On safari with African Bush Camps.

Great to have a mention in the International Travel Writers Alliance bulletin this month. It's become a rare thing to see my name in print this year!

Actually not. A young whale shark washed up on the beach here in West Bali yesterday morning. We tried for about an hour to push it into deep water but no luck. Such a shame. (About 3 months ago a baleen whale carcass washed up in exactly the same place). As far as anyone could tell me it's the first time one has been seen on this southwestern coast although this is certainly the wildest and most unexplored part of the island - see www.westbali.net.

Sambar deer enjoy the peace of dawn on a beach in West Bali National Park. Researchers have realised recently that these deer can survive by drinking seawater. They are considered semi-sacred by fishermen who believe that effigies of these deer (which have been seen swimming between islands) protect their boats.

Not your typical Balinese view!

A sprawling range of jungle-clad hills, covering about 600 square kilometres (about a tenth of Bali's total area) remains largely unexplored and there are still those who talk about the possible existence of tigers here.
