Green Cove Springs, FL

At the end of WWII, 600 ships, a US Navy "Mothball Fleet", were berthed along 13 concrete piers in Green Cove Springs. Primarily destroyers, destroyer escorts and fleet auxiliaries, the vessels were being maintained and preserved as a large reserve fleet that could be reactivated if necessary.

In 1960, President Lyndon B. Johnson’s very first executive order was the decommissioning of Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Green Cove Springs, relocating the entire fleet to his home state of Texas. You can still hear the bitterness in the tone of locals about that particular decision and timeline.
