Green cathedral - Groene Kathedraal, Almere, Flevoland province, The Netherlands

The Green Cathedral is a project by artist Marinus Boezem. The floor plan of Reims Cathedral has been recreated at full size by planting poplars. In the field next to it, the same shape has been created in the form of a recess in the plantings of oaks and hornbeams.

Marinus Boezem designed this "Gothic Growth Project" in 1978. The municipality of Almere decided in April 1987 to implement Boezem's plan. 178 poplars were planted that would eventually form this green creation, resembling a Gothic cathedral. In 1996 the poplars were high enough to open De Groene Kathedraal to the public. The poplars used are Italian poplars Populus nigra 'Italica'. The natural cathedral is 150 meters long and 75 meters wide. The poplars are planted at the points where the columns are in the real cathedral. In 1996, the concrete paths depicting the cross ribs of the Gothic vaults were completed.

The original idea was that this work of landscape art would die naturally and become a ruin. In 2018, the artist changed his mind. After the January storm of that year, a number of trees were blown down and the condition of the artwork was examined in the presence of the artist. The artist expressed his wish to preserve the work of art; "I have always thought it would be a fantastic idea if my cathedral would one day end up in an inhabited area. When I drove there recently, I saw that plots were being sold on which you could build your own house. So the cathedral will be built in the future. to stand at the center of the community. My work of art is not only part of history, it still has a current function. That is why I want to have it actively maintained." (Wikipedia)
