MY 50th UPLOAD IN EXPLORE!!! Highest position: 362 on Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Yesterday I had some real fun while shooting long exposures!

I'm coming across one of the 400d limits: its high ISO performance.

I'm sure this will be one of the fields where the 5d2 will make the difference.

Even if it may appear fake, the road sign is real!! I just tilted the arrow to point towards the Milky Way (and of course changed its label).

The orange light inside of the car comes from the radio.

One small note: today I received a call from the shop where I ordered the IR filter: they don't know when it will be available (at least 4+ weeks), so I decided to cancel the order.
It's pretty difficult to find it here in Italy, so I think I will try IR Photography next year!

ISO 1600, f/3.5, 39sec, EF-S 10-22 @ 10mm

The shot
I found a really pretty location, I parked on one side of a road, in one hour just one car passed by!
You'll see more shots from there in the next days.

The Processing

Photoshop:

- Cleaned the foreground
- Used Free Transform to rotate the sing
- Wrote a new label in the sing (Text Tool)
- Brightened the sing a little
- Used the Color Balance tool to cool the sky
- Created a Hue/Sat layer to change the tints inside the car
- Applied some Noise Reduction with Noise Ninja
- Used the Unsharp Mask to improve microcontrast
- Blurred the clouds a little
- Resized
- Framing and signature.

I'm pretty satisfied on how it turned out. Getting more and more involved with night exposures!
Have the best week ever, my friends!

Front Page! Highest position: 14 on Wednesday, September 9, 2009

I would really like to thank you ALL for the big personal support I've received.

Things are getting better and better, sometimes it's funny to see how everything changes that swiftly.

Today I placed the order for an Hoya R72 Infrared filter, I should get it in one week.
Then I promise you many new shots.

The shot
Shot in Cannes, I had a brief talk with the fisherman you see in the upper right corner.
(since I was doing a long exposure with the camera low on the water, he actually asked me if I was shooting fishes)

The Processing

Photoshop: (no tonemapping this time)

- Merged two Exposures in Photoshop
- Switched to LAB mode and applied two curves to improve contrast and tones
- Back to RGB, added a vibrance layer to boost up minor tones
- Created five Overlay layers to adjust light
- Used color balance tool to improve colors
- Applied a curve to brighten things up
- Used the Exposure tool to increase Exposure (+0.35)
- Resized
- Noise reduction with Neat Image
- Sharpening (Smart Sharpen + more accurate)
- Framing and signature.

I have mixed feelings about this shot. It was kinda hard processing it with a wise workflow.
Hope you like it.

EXPLORED! Highest position: 147 on Thursday, July 9, 2009

Still busy, these next two weeks will probably be even worse...
Getting stronger, on Thursday they scheduled me the final job interview (already succesfully passed through two) for a really interesting opportunity.
I will be meeting the General Manager of the company. Sounds good!

The shot
Another sunrise from my April Tuscany trip. Taken some minutes before "Tuscany Sunrise @75mm". Tighter crop, less contrasty.
I'm in love with that place.

The Processing
Photoshop: (SINGLE EXPOSURE)

- Duplicated the background layer, switched to soft light mode and applied a gradient mask (sky only)
- Switched to LAB mode and applied two curves to improve contrast and tones
- Back to RGB, added a vibrance layer to boost up minor tones
- Used color balance tool to improve colors
- Duplicated the background layer, switched to linear add and applied a gradient mask (foreground only)
- Created an Overlay layer to adjust light
- Resized
- Run Noise Ninja to reduce Noise
- Sharpening (Smart Sharpen + more accurate)
- Framing and signature.

EXPLORED!!! Highest position: 72 on Monday, September 6, 2010

Islas Cies, August 9th, 2010.

I got out from my tent 40 minutes before sunrise to shoot, and I have been pretty disappointed by some heavy clouds which blocked the splendid colors of
pre-dawn. I shot a few wideangles view before switching to the 70-200. Fortunately, the strong haze suddently turned pink and gave the scene a fantastic mood,
which paid me off for the early morning wake-up.

I cannot tell you how much I loved this place; I'm into processing many captures I got there, and everytimes it feels like I'm on one of those splendid beaches!

I just placed an order for my notebook replacement; can't wait to try my new quad-core with 8gb of ram and FULL HD display.

Details
- CANON 5d Mark II, EF 70-200 @ 155mm, f/14, 1/8 s, ISO 100
- Mirror Lockup, Phottix TR-90 Remote Shutter
- Tripod

The shot
Shot some minutes after sunrise, on Playa de Rodas (Islas Cies)

The Processing

Camera Raw

-Tuned White Balance

Photoshop:

- Added a Level layer to improve the contrast;
- Added a Curve layer to darken the hills a little;
- Added a Vibrance layer to improve tonal variation;
- Added a Color balance to improve tones;
- Added an Exposure layer with horizontal gradient mask to provide some slight direction light;
- Added an Orange photo filter with horizontal gradient mask to improve color quality;
- Resized for the Web (1200px);
- Applied an Unsharp Mask to slightly improve contrast;
- Smart Sharpen + More accurate (On luminosity 'blendind mode' with the sky masked off);
- Framing and Signature.

Again, NOT an HDR... In the future I will be shooting with a different approach, in order to replicate this kind of processing.

The shot
First capture of my first sunrise in Tuscany.

The Processing
Photoshop:

- Opened in Camera Raw to adjust temperature and tint
- Merged two RAW files with a GND using layer masks
- Switched to LAB mode and applied two curves to improve contrast and tones
- Still in LAB, corrected a strong blue color cast
- Back to RGB, added a vibrance layer to boost up minor tones
- Used color balance tool to improve colors
- Desaturated the blue in the foreground even more with an Hue/Sat layer
- Noise reduction with Neat Image (almost invisible)
- Resized
- Sharpening (Smart Sharpen + more accurate)
- Framing and signature.
