One of the most disastrous shoots I'd ever had. But most memorable and happy one as well.

Weather didn't favour us, our walk to the location was an hour instead of a 10min as my assistant who recced the place told us.

It was so cold for the first time I feared that I was gonna end up killing one of my models from a photoshoot. Like, seriously. (I'd asked her to go into the waters, wet and submerge herself at some point of time. And the water was freezing enough my bones were in pain just placing my feet in for a minute. I really thought we would die. Yet I was still asking her of it, I don't know what I was thinking, I reflected a lot upon it later on about how far we could really push another for a shoot...)

Abby shivered nonstop for some 3 hours after we got back into Kyoto. T_T

And then we had a parfait night lol.

I learnt defeat. Of things not being able to carry out according to plan no matter how meticulous I'd prepared.

It was painful, but we had so so much fun and laughter together. And Abby despite the cold still fought on to make the pictures for me, I realized how blessed and loved I was, truly.

I can't say it's the most epic of photos, but all the memories that come along with this, I treasure so very dearly. Thank you Abby, Chris, Rick. You're some of my best assistants. <3

Landscape photography of Scotland by Pete Barnes (Blog post at www.petebarnesphotography.co.uk/2011/06/29/a-few-more-sco... )

This shot is of Ardvreck Castle on Loch Assynt, another beautiful location just of the road before it splits to go down to Kylesku. Plenty to photograph here with a car park very close by. One of the main reasons for using a long shutter in this instance was because of the (fairly) frequent tourists, instead of cloning them out it’s easier to just put on the big stopper and just let them disappear as the exposure goes on, unless they stay still, then they must be cloned out! With this you get the lovely smooth waters and the moving clouds. I took some without the ND filter with a view to combining the smooth water version with the static puffy cloud version but in the end I just stuck with the unaltered long exposure. Again the mono conversion was done in silver efex adding a slight warmth to the shadow areas. I loved the mountains in the background but had to be careful not to go too wide as this would distort them and make them appear smaller, and no one wants small mountains! So this was taken at 35mm ISO100 f/16 for 75 seconds. Yeah I was on bulb mode as I needed a little more movement in the clouds (and the tourists!)

St. Agnes, Detroit, Michigan

2013 PX3 Prix de la Photographie Paris - Silver Award Winner, Professional Fine Art, Architecure

In the early 1990's I spent several years documenting historic churches for a book project called "A Threatened Legacy: Detroit's Historic Churches." The purpose of the project was to document historic structures that were being threatened to be closed and sometimes demolished due to the severe population decline of the city of Detroit. Now over fifteen years later I have decided to revisit many of these places (among others) that have since fallen into decay.
