"Light and shade" - Backlit blue Iris - Originally four flowers on this single stem - this is the last one. Earlier, faded flowers removed and you can see where the stem has been cut to remove the penultimate bloom.

Shy snail on leaf of a favourite hosta! (quickly removed after photographing, to a more desirable location in the garden!) The slanting light reveals the texture of the colourful shell. o5/04/09; 09:39:14; Garden of home in Oradour Fanais, the Charente, France. Nikon D300; ƒ22; 1/25 sec. View LARGE for detail

Having got to the very tip of a hosta leaf, he stretches out to see if he can reach another.

A hummingbird moth keeps a vigilant eye on the camera as it momentarily sucks nectar. These nimble, furry little creatures flit rapidly from flower to flower, so I use the technique of setting up the camera on a tripod, focusing on a flower. . . and waiting. Re-focus was on the eye. Nikon D300; ƒ9; 1/640 sec. Taken 23/07/08; 11:02:23. My garden in Oradour Fanais, France. View On Black View LARGE
