Gently pulsing though the glitter like plankton these stunning Jelly Fish look like space faring starships on a long voyage though the cosmos. Their space of course is the Pacific Ocean and they are but one of the many amazing exhibits at California's premier Monterey Bay Aquarium. About the size of my hand, they moved quickly though the cylinder tank which added to the complexity of getting this shot.

A member of the White Spotted Jellyfish this particular species has a brilliant natural blue tint. The stinging tentacles varied from white to a yellowish tint. No doubt the bright spotted markings are telling potential predators that they might want
to rethink this as their lunch special.

Monterey Bay Aquarium in California has one of the largest Jellyfish
collections and they are wonderful to watch but a real pain to photograph
for a number of reasons. First is that the aquarium is often crowded and
everyone wants to stand right up on the glass to get a good look. I can't
blame them as up front is the place to be but if you want to squeeze in to
get a photograph you better have some serious patience. Second is that
the lighting in the jellyfish exhibit is very subdued to allow better
viewing of these incredible creatures. Additionally they are put in to
these bright blue tanks which over saturate your image with blue. To
complicate matters further these animals move around the tank under their
own propulsion and that of the circulating water in the tank. The low
lighting with the movement means you will get a lot of noise even if you
have a good camera on hand. Finally you have to deal with the reflection
of light off the glass and this often includes flashes from point and shoot
cameras. Still, set a high ISO, a wide aperture and you should be able
to get a few shots. When you get home, use Photoshop's Saturation Layer
as I did here to reduce the overwhelming blue of the tanks. This also
serves to bring out the subtle color of the jellies.

Anyone who has been to the aquarium will realize that these jellies are in
fact upside down. Yes, I rotated the image 180 degrees to flip them so
their bells are on top but in reality this is upside down to how they swim
in the tank. For whatever reason, the tentacles are usually on the top.
I reoriented the image so they appear as we generally picture them in our
mind. The aquarium is a wonderful place to visit and if you want to take
pictures I recommend you take in a large walking cane to use as a monopod.

Still pictures do not do these creatures justice. They move so elegantly
though the water with a smooth pulsing rhythm. Filming them poses a number
of challenges. The main being light and their movement. I managed to get
a good number of Jellyfish shots and will post more later.

Monterey Bay Aquarium has one of the best jellyfish exhibits you will find.
Photographing them is a challenge but if you keep at it you will eventually
get good shots and this is one of my favorites. I didn't take the time to
write down the species but this jellyfish had little blue and white lumps
that looked like feet. It looked more like a magical mushroom pulled out
with by its roots than it did a jellyfish. Notice the translucent parts
that let you see though the creature and when lit by the artificial lighting
of the Aquarium show the complexity of the jellyfish. When I visit the
aquarium, I spend most of my time watching an trying to film these
incredibly beautiful animals.

In the wild, this animal would appear nearly invisible in the ocean. But
at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, artificial lighting makes the detail and
beauty of the Jellyfish apparent. The tiny stinging threads pulsate with
the movements of the main body hanging down many lengths the body of the
jellyfish. Its foot sparkles like stars in space in the water behind the
jellyfish. I can and have spent hours in the jellyfish exhibit just
watching these beautiful creatures. Very hard to film due to the low
lighting I was very lucky this guy was swimming very slowly across the
window and I was able to position the camera to captures the detail. They
look so incredible you just want to reach out and touch them but the signs
warn you of dangers of doing so. I can't think of a creature on the land
or under the sea that comes in such wonderful shapes and colors. More
jellyfish will be forth coming.
