The sunsets on Half Dome as a storm blows though. It was one of those days
when the overcast sky makes for a dull dismal day in the park. Perfect for
us photographers and lousy for the tourist. Originally this image sat till
today when I was playing around with HDR images. This is not the result of
an HDR image but it did give me the idea to double process the RAW file to
bring out some of the dark area and enhance the color of the storm clouds a
bit. The detail in the clouds was there but was somewhat blown out by the
setting of the camera. Likewise the lower right of the image was too dark.
A place where I should have taken multiple exposures to compensate for the
wide range of color. This is the result of a bit of work in Photoshop to
bring out some of that detail.

The image was taken just a ways down from Glacier Point along 4 mile trail
which leads down to the valley floor. It was late and the bus service had
stopped running so we did not continue down much further. I understand
there are equally stunning views of Yosemite Falls from the trail so I do
plan to revisit the trail in the near future. This was taken with my Nikon
D200 before I purchased some of the higher end lenses. The glass really
does make a difference as it reduces the amount of post processing you have
to do.

The late rains have created a number of ponds in the meadows in and around
Yosemite National Park and they make for unique shots of many of Yosemite's
famous icons. This is a good opportunity for us photographers as most of
the valley is overly photographed. The ponds allow us very unique shots on
many of the parks natural wonders. Pictured here is of course famous
Yosemite Falls and possibly the most famous waterfall in the world. No,
it's not the tallest. That honor goes to Angel Falls in Venezuela.
However it is probably the tallest of the easily accessible waterfalls in
the world making it one of the most photographed.

We were walking along the meadows when I noticed this large pond, well
perhaps it's more of a puddle, but the reflections of the falls was about as
perfect as you could get. The clouds were building towards a forecasted
evening shower making for perfect skies. There was a photographer directly
behind me on a hill but he was in the process of setting up so I pulled the
camera off the tripod which I consider a must for most landscape photography
and took a quick couple of shots of the reflection and moved out of the way
before the other photographer began shooting. This time of year it is hard
to find a spot where there is not a photographer setting up for a shot.
Even the iPhone photographers abound and you can see them with their cell
phones taking shots of the park. So I try to look for something unique and
different than the usual vista points and that is not always easy.

As you pass from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway One will once again split off and head up the coast. The first beach you come to is a small but lovely little beach known as Muir Beach. Houses line the northern cliffs just above a small stream that feeds into the sea. The southern edge of the beach is lined with large boulders that protrude from the surf. As winter storms breach the sand between the creek and the sea, Pacific Wild Salmon swim upstream to spawn underneath towering redwoods.

Because the Muir Beach is so near San Francisco and is a smallest beaches, about a thousand feet from end to end, it is often crowded making it a somewhat difficult beach for shooting seascapes. But if you take your time and don't mind houses lighting the northern cliffs, you can get some remarkable sunsets. Sunsets facing south pick up the light from San Francisco and can add to or ruin a sunset.

Muir Beach is also a gateway for great vistas of the Pacific via trails that travel south along the coastal foothills into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The coastal trails travel the full 17 or so miles to the Golden Gate Bridge over a number of steep hills and ravines.

It's been almost two years ago that I started putting this image together
but as if often the case life got in the way and I put it on hold. I am actually glad that I
didn't get back to it until now as the previous image I created help pull
this one together. There are a lot of hours in this one.

For those not familiar, Boston is an American rock band from Boston, MA who
achieved fame in the 1970's and early 1980's. In 1978 as a teenager I
attended my very first rock concert in Southern California. The band was
Boston. I have been a fan of the band every since. The starship is a guitar with the city Boston on the backside.

I hope you enjoy this piece of artwork as much as I did creating it. The
image is a dedication to the original lead singer Brad Delp.

Regards,
Darv

Fireworks rocket into the air illuminating the fog above San Francisco with their intense colorful hues on the 4th of July celebration for 2012. The lights of the city glow in the moist haze as famous Coit Tower centered between right in the rockets streams of glowing flames. To the right, the Transamerica tower sparkles with his high power light atop the pyramid. Just below you can just make out Ghirardelli Square and to the far left, the beautifully illuminated San Francisco Bay bridge. Upon close inspection you can note Old Glory flying proudly in a number of locations. San Francisco celebrated the 4th of July in fashion as usual flare with a stunning 20 minute dance of light and color above the bay.

Mike Oria and I set out to shoot the show hoping to find the moon rising behind the fireworks. However the fog which had played with the scene all afternoon finally overtook the horizon just before the show started and the full moon would be a no show except to illuminate the stream of cars lined up the hills as we departed the Marin Headlands. While it may not of compared to the Golden Gate Bridge anniversary celebration, San Francisco still made the 4th of July celebration memorable and we came away with a number of great shots.
