Happy New Year to everyone for 2013 from San Francisco!

Well in 2012 we survived Armageddon, Fell off a Fiscal Cliff and outlived the Twinkie... who could have guessed all that when the year the world was supposed to end began. It was a stunning fireworks show put on by the same people that put on the 75th Golden Gate Bridge Anniversary this year and they did not disappoint. Dazzling fireworks filled the night sky above the San Francisco Skyline to announce 2013 had arrived.

I returned this year with my good friend and fellow photographer Matt Granz to nearly have our New Years hopes dashed. Seems the area is now off limits and we were nearly chased off by security so next year I will have to find a new place to shoot from. Matt and I both managed to get some amazing shots of the City by the Bay and San Francisco never looked so amazing. Heavy clouds at sunset slowly gave way to light clouds with starlight shining through a steel blue sky illuminated by a near full midnight sky directly overhead.

So Happy New Year and may 2013 bring you all the best.

Oh, and please do check back and after I get a few hours sleep I'll post more from this amazing show.

New Years Eve Fireworks explode over San Francisco at the introduction of 2013. Boats lined the bay to get a good view of the fireworks high above the San Francisco Skyline. The Suspension section of the Bay Bridge was beautifully illuminated and the city was spectacular with many lights on even well past midnight. A light off shore breeze blew the smoke back towards the city as the light from the most recent fireworks illuminated the water, smoke and clouds above. It was a nice clear evening but quite cold, damp and breezy night and it didn't help that recent rains made the seating area atop Yerba Buena Island quite soggy. It was a great show and we've had our share during 2012 and this just topped it off nicely. It's a great view at any time of year, but especially during the fireworks shows that they have during New Years and the 4th of July.

My wife helped out again this year by dropping us off atop the hill and then sitting for 7 hours in the car waiting for me and Matt Granz to photograph the show. The least I could do was let her confiscate the tablet so I was left with my little phone to entertain myself atop the cold hill. It was worth it, I couldn't do it without her and she didn't complain one bit when we only got 5 hours of sleep last night. Our anniversary is in a few days so I will have a chance to make it up to her, once again.

Happy New Years Day 2013!

This is the very end of the 2012 sunset that greeted us as we started shooting atop Yerba Buena in anticipation of the New Years Eve 2013 San Francisco fireworks celebration. The weather forecast had been calling for clear skies all day long and well in to the night so this was a real treat when we arrived to find interesting skies and really came to life as the sun found a hole in the distant clouds. The skies would clear up for the most part just before the fireworks display over San Francisco began allowing many stars to shine though but the scene did haze up just a tad more than in this crystal clear shot of the city. At this time, cars were flying across the bridge in moderate traffic. By the time the show began, so many cars were trying to get on the island that there were only a handful of cars making it across the deck. It would be another 7 hours of sitting in the cold wet mud before the spectacular fireworks show would begin.

San Francisco rings in the New Year with fireworks over one of the more beautiful skylines of California. The annual show arrives at the stroke of midnight and dazzles thousands of partiers that have flooded the city to celebrate and ring in the new year. With the fireworks above, the city below and the stunning Bay Bridge as a backdrop with its suspension cables adorned with strings of light it makes for a remarkable show. 2013 officially arrives on the west coast of the United States. Atop the famous Transamerica pyramid is mounted a special intensely bright light glows for the holiday twinkling in the sky like a distant supernova. On the far right, the immense Bank of America tower scrapes the stars from the sky. The artistry of the scene is unsurpassed. Welcome to San Francisco!

San Francisco rings in 2014 with a spectacular fireworks show. This particular burst started out entirely blue then turning red on one edge that would wrap around in a wave motion until the entire burst turned red before fading. Smoke from previous works lingered over the Bay Bridge which was illuminated by the 75th anniversary Bay Lights Project on the vertical suspensions. We lined up to shoot this year from the far end of Treasure Island and it worked out nicely and not so nearly crowded as in previous years.
