When many think of structures in San Francisco the first image to come to
mind is probably that of the Golden Gate Bridge or perhaps the Transamerica
tower and San Francisco's Skyline. Granted some will instantly recognize
the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge often just called the Bay Bridge.
If you visit San Francisco, you're likely to see the Bay Bridge first as it
towers above the Embarcadero and San Francisco's skyline and can be seen
from many locations on the eastern side of San Francisco.
Built roughly the same time as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge was
finished before the Golden Gate and supports two levels with the upper level
being westbound while the lower section travels eastward towards Oakland and
the East Bay Area. While much longer than the Golden Gate Bridge, each
suspension span is smaller and the towers shorter by a few hundred feet.
The Bay Bridge consists of two main sections, a suspension section and a
cantilever section on the Oakland side of Yerba Buena island which is
currently being replaced with a modern suspension design set to open in
2013.
This very large panorama was composited using five landscape shots taken as
May 5th's Super Moon rose above the horizon beneath the massive structure of
iron beams, cables and rivets. At full resolution (4006 x 6377 pixels) you can
clearly see the individual rivets on the superstructure. If you look closely at the full
size image, you can see four seagulls at the base of the bridge. One on
each lamppost and one sitting dead center of the base of the main tower and
one directly below him on the cement base.
There are a number of other seagulls throughout the shot though they might
be hard to see. How many can you count?

I hope your not tired of firework shots just yet....some of the best are yet to come.

San Francisco rang in the New Year with one of the best firework shows I have seen much less filmed. Several Pink Butterfly fireworks erupt over the skyscrapers that make up San Francisco's unique skyline. The fireworks reflect in the shimmering waters of San Francisco Bay as seen from atop Yerba Buena Island.
To the far right, you can see the Transamerica building with its stunning ornament that strobes and twinkles brightly in the distance. The famous Embarcadero Center are the towers outlined with lights and just below it and to the left you can make out the red lights atop the Port of San Francisco's restored clock tower.
Just prior to the bridge you can see the fairly new tower known as One Ricon Hill and of course the famous suspension section of the beautifully lit Bay Bridge. The far south, the hills of South San Francisco are adorn with lights from the many antenna towers. It all makes for one incredible New Years Eve vision of the City by the Bay.

San Francisco welcomes the New Year with a stellar fireworks show high above California's stunningly beautiful, San Francisco skyline as seen from Yerba Buena Island (connected to Treasure Island). Previous nights had been fogged in and there was some fear that the New Years Eve festivities would be socked in but as it turned out we were treated to stunning clear skies above the City By The Bay. 2011 was a great year for us as we look forward to 2012.
Happy New Year 2012 - May all your wishes come true.
December 31st, 2012 this image has once again become my top image so I thought I'd take a moment to wish everyone a Happy New Year for 2013, have fun and be safe.

The stunning clarity you get at night from very high altitude is an astronomers dream. Here you can clearly see the constellation Orion rising over Lake Tioga at an altitude of 6,636 feet above sea level. At this altitude, the air is thin and crisp and makes for some stunning night photography. We were assisted by a nearly full moon that elegantly illuminated the peaks and forest of the High Sierra. A walk down to the lake can be breathtaking, literally as the air is much thinner. Lake Tioga lies just outside the Eastern entrance of Yosemite National Park. It's distance from the valley makes it somewhat less traveled and even more of a thrill for tourist who make the extra effort. It's truly one of the gems of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range.
You can clearly see the star Betelgeuse, bright yellow star on the left which is a Red Supergiant star and one of the most luminous stars in the sky. It outshines the second brightest star in the constellation Rigel, the star on the opposite corner that makes up the constellation. The clouds were so thin, wispy and moving at a good clip that the long exposure allowed the constellations to show though. I found this effect to be quite exciting as it allows you to see both the constellations and the brightly moonlit clouds at the same time.
I made the late night trip with fell Flickr photographers Matt Granz and Miguel (aka Amigo). As we drove past it was clear we would have to stop. We spent over an hour photographing the lake before moving on to Mono Lake and more stellar shots from the High Desert. The trip was mainly to photograph some of the Fall Color that dots the Eastern Sierra and we would not be disappointed. So stay tuned as there will be many more equally great shots to come.
Regards,
Darv

The USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) call sign "Gold Eagle" arrives home in San Francisco from a tour of duty in the Middle East sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge for Fleet Week 2011. She's home to nearly 6000 crew members (including Air wing). The massive Nimitz class upercarrier is a city of its own and measures 1092 feet yet is dwarfed by the Golden Gate bridge which measures about 1.2 miles across.
This is by far the largest panorama I have attempted. And to complicate matters, much of the subject was moving from frame to frame as I took the shots by hand. I ran in to a number of stitching errors, mostly involving the cables on the Golden Gate Bridge and the fact that the ship and aircraft all move between frames. The sheer size of the stitching process brought my computer to a slow crawl taking up to 30 minutes for each attempt at stitching the 23 images then only to find there was an issue that forced me to start from scratch. I spent most of the day banging my head on the keyboard but as evening came I finally got a handle on it and got each images perspective adjusted so the cables all lined up.
The final tally.... See for yourself:
