Back in 1976 a Rock and Roll band going by nothing more than the name of the
city from which they reigned would burst on the charts with their first
album by the same name and become an overnight sensation. A couple of years
later and I had barely turned 16 and just purchased my first turntable at a
yard sale. With a few bucks left over I picked up the bands second album
and spent hours on end looking over the cover art on the LP as I would
listen to the tunes with my headphones on. Oh how I do miss all the cover
art, inserts and fold outs that came with music back in the 70's. It's
just not the same today. That year I took my high school sweetheart to see
them in concert. It was a night I will never forget.

So fast forward several years and I now had a family and was working at a
game company (Sierra) learning some new 3D software we used to make game
art. I was looking to render a 3D spaceship but of course all the famous
ones from Star Wars or Star Trek had been available for download for some
time. I needed something different that I could show as my own work. There
it was sitting on my desk. That same 1978 album in CD format right on my
desk with a guitar spaceship right on the cover. I started modeling the
ship at once and eventually uploaded some images. Nothing great but
immediately fans of band picked up on the artwork and requesting more.
Still a fan of the band myself, I had assumed they had long since faded in
to Rock and Roll history but as it turned out with a few new members they
were back in the studio working on a new album. Through the fans my artwork
had made it to the band and well, just imagine how it would feel to get a
call from one of your favorite bands wanting to use your work. WOW! What
a rush. I eventually got to go back stage and meet the lead singer and
several other members of the band and I owe it all to the fans. I've made
several other Boston images for shirts, calendars and tribute bands but this
is the image that made the cover and is popular with the fans.

I debated for some time whether or not I should upload my artwork to flickr
but decided that there had to be fans here that would enjoy the art for
their desktop or the slickr screensaver. So here is the image, uploaded at
1920 x 1200 that made it to the bands fifth album. Anyone familiar with the
band will instantly recognize the guitar starship which I envisioned here
lifting the famous city into space to escape the destruction of the Earth
which was the premise of the first debut album simply entitled "Boston". I
hope you enjoy it and how the story of how the image came to be.

This image is of the Boston Starship flying though an unknown star nursery nebula in deep space. The image was created for the Rock and Roll band simply called Boston who in the 70's released the number one selling debut album of all time. You now hear many of their songs in your favorite TV shows, sports and commercials.

Sadly the band lost it's lead singer a while back and has since been somewhat quiet though they are expected to release a new album though at the time of this writing no date has been set.

It's been almost two years ago that I started putting this image together
but as if often the case life got in the way and I put it on hold. I am actually glad that I
didn't get back to it until now as the previous image I created help pull
this one together. There are a lot of hours in this one.

For those not familiar, Boston is an American rock band from Boston, MA who
achieved fame in the 1970's and early 1980's. In 1978 as a teenager I
attended my very first rock concert in Southern California. The band was
Boston. I have been a fan of the band every since. The starship is a guitar with the city Boston on the backside.

I hope you enjoy this piece of artwork as much as I did creating it. The
image is a dedication to the original lead singer Brad Delp.

So I was backing up some files tonight and came across the original 3D files used to create the image and thought it would be a good time to bring it up to current computer screen resolutions. About 10 years ago now I did a little bit of artwork for a little band some of you might remember from the 70's simply called Boston. For those of you that remember the band you will recognize right away that the ship is actually a guitar with the city of Boston on the back side. This image would eventually get picked up by the fan club and turned in to a really cool T-Shirt and included in a calendar. From time to time one of the t-shirts may pop up on ebay but they are pretty rare and hard to come by these days. I did a number of images for Boston and even had a different piece published one of the albums.

Thought I would post it here at the new size for fans to enjoy at the larger
size.
