Because this is a Panorama it is best when viewed in the larger sizes.
Yosemite Falls and an Old Crag in the meadow. Yosemite is often best in
the winter months due to the clouds, and lack of tourist. It had just
finished raining when I took this shot and I had the shot all to myself
which is quite rare in Yosemite Valley. This is a panorama stitching of
several images.

One of the many lush green images I got while visiting John Muir Woods in
the rain. All the small streams fill up and small waterfalls begin to show
up all around the as small creeks feed the main creek running though the
center of the park. The park is located just North of San Francisco and
just off Highway One. It is hard to believe such beauty is just outside
some of California's busiest cities. It was saved only due to the rough
terrain surrounding the grove of redwoods and the foresight of some early
conservationist. Enjoying it during the rain meant somewhat smaller crowds
but I was surprised how many people would just tough it out and enjoy the
park which speaks to its beauty and fame.

By far my favorite time to visit Yosemite is in the winter. No crowds, and
few photographers except for the truly dedicated ones. We had the bridge
all to ourselves as night approached. The exposure was fairly long 1.3
seconds but I knew enough back then to bring my tripod so all was good. The
longer exposure gives the waterfall a nice smooth appearance. Had I had my
ND filters with me I might have gone for a longer exposure to help fill in
the bounce of the water off the rocks towards the bottom. A light snow had
fallen the night before and we were nearly snowed in up at the Tenaya Lodge
just outside the south exit of Yosemite.
Lower Yosemite Falls may appear small in this image but it's over 400 ft to
the top of the lower falls. It's just when compared to the upper fall that
it seems small. This image was taken late at night and again another
reason I shoot both RAW + JPEG. In this image I went back to the RAW to
adjust the white point slightly and get rid of most of the blue tint that
was in the original JPEG image. This image was shot at the bridge and as
usual, the spray from the waterfall was crossing the bridge. Due to the air
temperature the mist would freeze back in to snow so it posed little danger
to the gear. It did however make for a slick trail running up to the falls
as there were many patches of ice along the way. That last thing you want
to do is drop the camera gear so I left it in the backpack till we reached
the bridge.
Many people have expressed a fear of driving in the snow but they generally
keep Yosemite roads well plowed year round. If you do get stuck in the
valley during winter, a stay in the Ahwahnee Hotel isn't so bad an
experience. I have found the following items useful when traveling in
Yosemite during the snow storms. Good quality chains, a plastic poncho,
several flashlights, an exercise or camping pad which comes in handy when
putting the chains on, good winter boots, hand warming pads and some warm
dry gloves. Drive slowly of course and if possible get behind a snow plow
when it snows but keep your distance and you should do fine.

This is a picture during a storm of an Old Crag which is still standing in
the valley floor not far from the bridge where everyone stops to take
pictures of Yosemite. I like the subtle colors of this shot and the way
the old crag frames the lower falls. If you take time to look at the old
crag in detail you will see a small surprise. Yes, a small red crested
woodpecker on the tree drills away. Perhaps the reason the tree died in the
first place. These little birds used to drill holes in my home when I
lived in the area. They eventually killed off one of the nearby pine trees
which then fell during a storm. The tree was so riddled with holes each of
which contained a well wedged acorn. These birds are common in the foot
hills of the Sierra Nevada and sometimes considered a pest. A least I got
to shoot this one with a camera.
Enjoy

Sempervirens Waterfall is a 20' waterfall just off the road in the Big Basin
Redwoods State Park near Santa Cruz California on Boulder Creek. This is a
large park of spread out Coastal Redwoods. Unlike the bigger waterfalls,
sempervirens waterfall is striking due to the lush green rain forest full of
moss and ferns surrounding the waterfall. I lucked out and got the sun
shooting down though the tall redwoods just right lighting up the lower part
of the falls where it entered the water. Though it wasn't needed I put on
my polarizer filter to reduce the light and extend the shutter time.
