This is a picture during a storm of an Old Crag which is still standing in
the valley floor not far from the bridge where everyone stops to take
pictures of Yosemite. I like the subtle colors of this shot and the way
the old crag frames the lower falls. If you take time to look at the old
crag in detail you will see a small surprise. Yes, a small red crested
woodpecker on the tree drills away. Perhaps the reason the tree died in the
first place. These little birds used to drill holes in my home when I
lived in the area. They eventually killed off one of the nearby pine trees
which then fell during a storm. The tree was so riddled with holes each of
which contained a well wedged acorn. These birds are common in the foot
hills of the Sierra Nevada and sometimes considered a pest. A least I got
to shoot this one with a camera.
Enjoy

Best when Viewed On Black
These Black Oak trees grow all over Yosemite Valley. This set is across the
street from Yosemite Chapel. I tired getting a good shot of the trees from
the church parking lot but it turned out that the best picture was of the
warm Californian sun coming though the brightly colored leaves as filmed
from beneath the trees. The black oaks are a favorite of photographers
especially during the winter months due to the dark color of their trunks.
The largest grove (that I have found) sits right next to El Capitan where
people often sit with telescopes to photograph the rock climbers. These
trees can get massive but still look small against the sheer size of the
valley walls. I hope to revisit these trees in the near future.

This is somewhat of a unique angle on Half dome that I shot about a half
mile down the four mile trail. If you go to Glacier Point and walk down
this trail the dome is hidden and you don't get much of a view of anything
but the forest. As you approach a steep area the trees give way and you get
a glimpse of Half Dome silhouetted by pine trees. This gives you a real
sense of the size of Half Dome and just how massive that rock is. This is
possibly my favorite shot of Half Dome because it was so unique and not like
any I had seen thus far. The setting sun really helped give what had been
a dreary day a nice warm light on Half Dome. You can even make out some of
Clouds Rest just behind the dome. We didn't make it all the way down the
trail but we plan to do this hike again. I'd really like to see this one
with a good sunrise behind it. Will have to get up real early for that
one.
Hope you like this one.
Drop me a note if you do.
Cheers,

Recommend Viewing On Black
This is a massive panorama of Yosemite's high country as shot from Glacier Point.
This image is over 6000 pixels wide in its original format. I have reduced it here so that it would fit on a screen that supported 1200 pixels in height. So if your monitor will go high enough you REALLY need to look at this one at full size to see all the detail. I lucked out and the clouds on this day really cooperated and made for a nice sky that still allowed you to see to the very far edge of the Eastern Sierra Nevada Range. Often
cloudy days don't let you see all the way to the horizon. A clear day would not have made for as nice an image.
Half Dome dominates the image but you will also see Liberty Cap (lower right of Half Dome), Cathedral Peak to the distant left and you can just make out Clouds Rest behind Half Dome. This is not the typical viewing points that you would stop to see. Along the road to Glacier Point you take one sharp turn where there is not a lot of space to pull over. If you do, you are greeted by this impressive vista. Personally I like it better than the other two points where most pictures are taken.
From here, the path of the glacier that carved the rock is clear. Actually it you look carefully you can see that two glaciers joined just below this point. One coming from the right and the other clearly visible from the left of Half Dome. This was taken with my Nikon D200 mounted on an inexpensive tripod. No panorama head was used. Stitching the images together was tricky and it took quite some time before I was able to present this image. This is the largest image I have ever uploaded to this point but I felt it was necessary for you to get the full feel of the detail in the image.
Jot me a note if you like this one. Your comments are appreciated.

Standing there in the snow, alone, the silence that comes with the snow seems almost deafening because the lack of any sound is so apparent. It’s not hard to imagine how it was for the Ahwahnee people just barely over just a 150 years ago who inhabited Yosemite Valley. No roads, no tourist, no dust, no pollution. That was how it seemed this day. They had closed the road for repairs so the only access to this spot was to walk in. When we arrived it was dark and gray and the snow was still falling and other than occasional plops of snow falling from the trees, there was no sound. I have been in Yosemite many times and can never remember it being this quiet. Another couple had followed us in but had given up on hoping for the clouds to clear the high country. I hung with it knowing that things change here fast. After a few minutes the clouds parted and the sun lit up El Capitan. The clouds on the peaks changed so quickly they seemed almost alive. I clicked off shots as quickly as I could as every moment seemed perfect. On any other day, even in the winter, this spot would have been fairly crowded. I have a lot of images I like but none make me feel the way this one does.
