A Harvest Moon rises over the calm waters of Bass Lake in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains. It’s been so long since I lived in the mountains I had forgotten that the rise and set of the sun and moon are delayed due to the high mountains that surround you. So I waited for the last Full Moon of Summer to rise over the lake near North Fork. I was hoping for a moon at sunset but due to the mountains on the far horizon it took the moon an additional 40 minutes by which time the skies had faded. I improvised and use the trees and my hand to cut down on the brightness of the moon. Yes, my hand acted as an ND filter to reduce the exposure time on the sky. Sort of a poor man’s method but in this case just too lazy to run back up to the car and get the filters.

After shooting the wife and I took a drive around the moonlit lake. Stunning to see the full moon shimmering in the water between the pines. It’s nice being back in the Mountains.
