The USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) call sign "Gold Eagle" arrives home in San Francisco from a tour of duty in the Middle East sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge for Fleet Week 2011. She's home to nearly 6000 crew members (including Air wing). The massive Nimitz class upercarrier is a city of its own and measures 1092 feet yet is dwarfed by the Golden Gate bridge which measures about 1.2 miles across.

This is by far the largest panorama I have attempted. And to complicate matters, much of the subject was moving from frame to frame as I took the shots by hand. I ran in to a number of stitching errors, mostly involving the cables on the Golden Gate Bridge and the fact that the ship and aircraft all move between frames. The sheer size of the stitching process brought my computer to a slow crawl taking up to 30 minutes for each attempt at stitching the 23 images then only to find there was an issue that forced me to start from scratch. I spent most of the day banging my head on the keyboard but as evening came I finally got a handle on it and got each images perspective adjusted so the cables all lined up.

The final tally.... See for yourself:
